Ingredients
Breadcrumbs
- 6 slices Bread day-old bread works best; remove crusts
Wet Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Milk
- 1 tbsp Cocoa Powder unsweetened
- 2 tbsp Sugar granulated
- 2 tbsp Sunflower Oil
- 1 large Egg
Leavening Agent
- 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
Optional Toppings
- 2 tbsp Chocolate Syrup for drizzling
- Chocolate Sprinkles as needed, for decorating
Instructions
Prepare the Breadcrumbs
- Remove crusts from bread slices and tear into bite-sized pieces. Place in a food processor and pulse until you have coarse crumbs.
Combine Wet Ingredients
- In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, cocoa powder, sugar, oil, and egg until smooth.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
- Add the breadcrumbs and baking powder to the wet ingredients. Gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
Bake the Cake
- Grease a small (6-inch) baking pan or oven-safe skillet. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Stovetop Cooking Method
- Preheat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Place the baking pan with the batter inside the skillet, ensuring a stand (such as a heat-resistant trivet) is placed underneath. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If using an oven, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick.
Cool and Decorate
- Let the cake cool completely before serving. Drizzle with chocolate syrup and sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips
- For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
- If your bread is very dry, you may need to add a tablespoon or two more of milk to achieve the desired consistency.
- To prevent sticking, use a nonstick baking pan or generously grease your chosen pan.
- Feel free to get creative with toppings! Fresh berries, whipped cream, or chopped nuts would also be delicious.
