Instructions

Prepare the Breadcrumbs

  • Remove crusts from bread slices and tear into bite-sized pieces. Place in a food processor and pulse until you have coarse crumbs.

Combine Wet Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together milk, cocoa powder, sugar, oil, and egg until smooth.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Add the breadcrumbs and baking powder to the wet ingredients. Gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

Bake the Cake

  • Grease a small (6-inch) baking pan or oven-safe skillet. Pour batter into the prepared pan.

Stovetop Cooking Method

  • Preheat a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Place the baking pan with the batter inside the skillet, ensuring a stand (such as a heat-resistant trivet) is placed underneath. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If using an oven, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes. Check for doneness with a toothpick.

Cool and Decorate

  • Let the cake cool completely before serving. Drizzle with chocolate syrup and sprinkle with chocolate sprinkles.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips

  • For a richer flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
  • If your bread is very dry, you may need to add a tablespoon or two more of milk to achieve the desired consistency.
  • To prevent sticking, use a nonstick baking pan or generously grease your chosen pan.
  • Feel free to get creative with toppings! Fresh berries, whipped cream, or chopped nuts would also be delicious.
