Ingredients
Sauce Base
- 2 cup Tomato Ketchup any brand
- 1 cup Water
- 1 cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Worcestershire Sauce
Sweeteners & Spices
- 1 cup Sugar brown, packed
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 cup Lemon Juice freshly squeezed
- 1.5 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 tbsp Cumin ground
- 6-8 dashes Sauce louisiana hot sauce, hot, or more to taste
Optional additions
- 1 tsp Paprika for an extra smoky flavor, smoked
- 1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper for extra heat (optional)
Instructions
Prepare the Sauce
- Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Simmer and Thicken
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Strain the Sauce
- Remove the sauce from heat and pour it through a fine-mesh sieve or strainer to remove the onion and garlic. Discard solids.
Adjust and Cool
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. You may wish to add more hot sauce for extra heat, or more brown sugar for added sweetness.
- Let the sauce cool completely before transferring to an airtight container and refrigerating for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld. This will also help the sauce thicken further.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for the Best BBQ Sauce
- Use Fresh Ingredients: Freshly squeezed lemon juice and minced garlic will make a noticeable difference in the flavor profile.
- Adjust the Heat: Start with less hot sauce and add more to your liking. You can always add more heat, but you can't take it away!
- Don't Rush the Simmering: Allowing the sauce to simmer gently for the full time will ensure a rich, thick, and flavorful sauce.
- Make it Your Own: Experiment with different types of vinegar, sweeteners, or spices to create your unique BBQ sauce blend.
