Instructions

Preparation

  • Wash and soak the chana dal in plenty of water for at least 4-5 hours, or overnight for a smoother batter.
  • Drain the soaked chana dal completely.
  • Grind the drained chana dal into a smooth batter using a blender or food processor. Add a little water if needed to achieve a smooth, pourable consistency.

Mixing the Batter

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground chana dal batter with the chopped onion, green chili, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well to combine all ingredients thoroughly.

Cooking the Cheela

  • Heat the olive oil in a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat.
  • Pour 1/4 cup of the batter onto the hot pan, spreading it thinly into a small circle using the back of a spoon.
  • Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully when the edges start to lift and the bottom is cooked.
  • Continue cooking the remaining batter in the same manner.

Serving

  • Serve the hot Chana Dal Cheela immediately with your choice of chutney, yogurt, or a side of vegetables.

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for Perfect Chana Dal Cheela

  • Soaking the chana dal for longer will result in a smoother and more flavorful cheela.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan; cook the cheela in batches to ensure even cooking and browning.
  • Adjust the amount of green chilies and red chili powder to control the level of spice according to your preference.
  • Experiment with adding other vegetables like finely chopped carrots, potatoes, or spinach to the batter for added nutrition and flavor.
