Prepare the Dal

  • Soak the toor dal in 2 cups of water for at least 20 minutes. Pressure cook until soft and tender (about 3-4 whistles).

Tempering the Spices

  • Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, and asafoetida. Once the seeds splutter, add the whole red chilies and cumin seeds. Sauté briefly until fragrant.

Combining Ingredients

  • Add the cooked dal to the pan and stir well to combine with the tempering.

Adding Spices and Flavor

  • Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, salt, and garam masala. Mix thoroughly.

Incorporating Vegetables

  • Add the chopped tomato and green chili. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low.

Simmering and Sweetening

  • Simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors have melded. Stir in jaggery (or lemon juice) and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.
