Ingredients
Dal & Soak
- 1 cup Pigeon Pea split pigeon peas
- 2 cup Water for soaking
Spices & Aromatics
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds rai
- 1 tsp Fenugreek Seeds methi dana
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida hing
- 2 Chilies red, whole
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds jeera
- 1 tsp Coriander Powder dhania
- 1 tsp Garam Masala gujarati style
Vegetables & Other Ingredients
- 1 Tomato chopped, medium-sized
- 1 Chili green
- 1 tbsp Groundnuts roasted
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi
- 1 tsp Chili Powder red
- 1.5 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1 tbsp Jaggery or 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 4 tbsp Oil vegetable or ghee
Instructions
Prepare the Dal
- Soak the toor dal in 2 cups of water for at least 20 minutes. Pressure cook until soft and tender (about 3-4 whistles).
Tempering the Spices
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, and asafoetida. Once the seeds splutter, add the whole red chilies and cumin seeds. Sauté briefly until fragrant.
Combining Ingredients
- Add the cooked dal to the pan and stir well to combine with the tempering.
Adding Spices and Flavor
- Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, salt, and garam masala. Mix thoroughly.
Incorporating Vegetables
- Add the chopped tomato and green chili. Mix well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low.
Simmering and Sweetening
- Simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the flavors have melded. Stir in jaggery (or lemon juice) and continue to simmer for another 15 minutes.
Garnish and Serve
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with plain rice and a side of tomato-onion salad.
