Ingredients
For the Fish
- 500 gm Fish katla, or similar
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
For the Green Paste
Instructions
- Wash the fish pieces thoroughly. Marinate them with the turmeric powder, salt, and lemon juice. This helps to remove any fishy odor and adds flavor.
- In a blender, combine the mixed green leaves, green chilies, and garlic cloves. Blend into a smooth paste. Add a splash of water if needed to facilitate blending.
- Heat a little oil in a pan. Shallow fry the marinated fish pieces until lightly golden. Set aside.
- In the same pan, add the finely chopped onion and sauté until translucent. This builds a flavor base for the curry.
- Add the green paste to the pan and sauté for a few minutes until fragrant. This allows the raw flavors of the paste to mellow.
- Stir in the yogurt and mix well. Adding yogurt creates a creamy texture and a tangy flavor.
- Add salt to taste and a little water to adjust the consistency of the curry. Bring the curry to a gentle simmer.
- Gently place the fried fish pieces into the simmering curry. Cover the pan and cook for a few more minutes, allowing the fish to absorb the flavors of the curry.
- Serve the Green Fish Curry hot with rice or roti.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra depth of flavor, lightly roast the green chilies and garlic before blending them with the leafy greens to make the paste—this will add a subtle smokiness to the dish.
- If you prefer a creamier texture, whisk the yogurt until smooth before adding it to the gravy, and add it off the heat to prevent curdling and maintain a velvety finish.
- To make this recipe dairy-free, substitute yogurt with coconut milk or cashew cream; this will lend a rich, slightly sweet undertone that complements the tangy and spicy notes.
Expert Tips
- Adjust the amount of green chilies to control the spice level according to your preference.
- For a richer flavor, use bone-in fish. Be sure to remove the bones before serving.
- Freshly chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice make excellent garnishes for this dish.
Storage Instructions
- Leftover Greeny Fish can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days; gently reheat and serve with a squeeze of fresh lime to revive its tangy freshness.
