Ingredients
For the Urad Dal Pakodis
For the Dal Gravy
- 1 cup Lentils additional lentils for gravy; soaked for at least 6-8 hours, urad dal, black, split
- 1 tbsp Onion Paste
- 1 tsp Ginger-Garlic Paste
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder adjust to taste, red
- 2 tsp Coriander Powder dhania
- 1 tsp Cumin Seeds jeera
- 1 tsp Salt to taste
- 2 Tomatoes finely chopped
- 2 tbsp Oil for tempering
- 1/4 cup Water for the gravy, additional water may be needed based on desired consistency
- 1 tbsp Coriander for garnishing
Instructions
Prepare the Urad Dal Pakodis
- Soak 1 cup urad dal for 6-8 hours. Drain and blend into a smooth batter. Season with 1/2 tsp salt. Heat 4 tbsp oil in a pan. Drop small spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
Prepare the Dal Gravy
- Soak 1 cup urad dal for 6-8 hours, then drain. In a separate pan, heat 2 tbsp oil. Add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté until fragrant. Add onion paste and fry until golden brown. Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, and coriander powder. Cook for a minute. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until the oil separates from the masala.
Combine and Simmer
- In a bowl, combine the soaked urad dal with 1/4 cup water. Blend to a smooth consistency. Add this mixture to the masala. Stir well and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the dal is cooked through and tender.
Finish and Serve
- Add the fried urad dal pakodis to the dal gravy. Stir gently and cook for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, garnish with fresh coriander leaves, and serve hot with rice or roti.
