Ingredients
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup Lentils red, red lentils
- 1 medium Mango peeled and sliced, raw
- 1 medium Onion finely chopped
- 1 inch piece Ginger fresh, grated
- 2 cloves Garlic minced
- 1-2 Chili adjust to taste, finely chopped, green
- 2 tbsp Oil vegetable or mustard oil
- 1/2 tsp Panch Phoron also known as five spice blend, alternatively use a combination of mustard seeds, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, nigella seeds and fenugreek seeds
- A small bunch Coriander finely chopped, for garnish, fresh
Instructions
Preparing the Masoor Dal
- Wash the masoor dal thoroughly. Cook in a pressure cooker with turmeric powder and salt until soft. Add the raw mango slices during the last minute of cooking.
Tempering the Dal
- Heat oil in a pan. Add panch phoron (five-spice blend) and let it splutter. Add chopped onions, grated ginger, and minced garlic. Sauté until softened. Add green chilies and sauté for another minute.
Combining and Serving
- Add the cooked dal to the pan with the tempering. Mix well and simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot with steamed rice or roti.

- For a smoother dal, you can blend a portion of the cooked dal before mixing it with the tempering.
