Ingredients
For the Rice
- 1/3 cup Basmati Rice
For the Paneer Filling
- 200 gm Cottage Cheese
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Chili Powder or to taste, red
Instructions
- Wash the basmati rice and soak it in water with 1/2 teaspoon of salt for 30 minutes. This helps the rice cook evenly and become fluffy.
- In a bowl, crumble the paneer. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of red chili powder. Mix well and set aside.
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the grated ginger and sauté for a few seconds until fragrant.
- Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent. Then, add the mixed vegetables and sugar. Sauté for 3 minutes until slightly softened.
- Stir in the soy sauce, salt, white pepper, and MSG (if using). Cook for another minute. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool completely.
- Drain the soaked rice. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- With slightly wet hands, take a small portion of the crumbled paneer and flatten it into a disc. Place a spoonful of the cooled vegetable mixture in the center.
- Bring the edges of the paneer disc together to enclose the filling, forming a ball. Then, roll the ball in the rice, ensuring it's fully coated.
- Repeat the process with the remaining paneer and vegetable filling. You should have about 5 medium-sized rice balls.
- Heat water in a steamer or idli pot. Grease the steaming plate with oil. Place the rice balls on the greased plate.
- Steam the rice balls for about 20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked through and the balls have bloomed slightly, resembling flowers.
- Serve the Steamed Paneer Rice Balls hot and enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- Soaking the rice is crucial for proper cooking as it's steamed, not boiled.
- You can add any vegetables you like.
- Be mindful when adding salt, as it's incorporated in multiple stages of the recipe.
Expert Tips
- For a richer flavor, consider lightly toasting the rice before soaking. This adds a nutty aroma and enhances the overall taste.
- Don't overcrowd the steamer. Ensure enough space between the paneer/tofu and vegetables for even steaming and optimal cooking.
- If using delicate vegetables like spinach or peas, add them towards the end of the steaming process to prevent overcooking.
Storage Instructions
- Allow the steamed paneer/tofu flowers to cool completely before storing.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
- Reheat gently in a steamer or microwave, ensuring not to overcook.
