Ingredients
Sweet Potatoes
- 1/2 kg Potato sweet
Spices and Aromatics
Other Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Coriander freshly chopped
- 2 tsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 cup Peas boiled, green
- 1/4 cup Chutney And/Or Chutney for serving, green, sweet
Instructions
- Roast the sweet potatoes directly over charcoal or in a 400°F (200°C) oven until tender and slightly smoky. This adds a wonderful depth of flavor. Alternatively, you can pan-fry or air-fry the sweet potatoes.
- Once the sweet potatoes are cooked, peel and cube them.
- Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the asafoetida and sauté for a few seconds until fragrant. This releases its characteristic aroma.
- Add the boiled green peas, cubed sweet potatoes, salt, black pepper, black salt, chopped ginger, and green chilies to the pan. Toss everything together until well combined.
- Sprinkle with fresh cilantro and lemon juice. The lemon juice adds a touch of brightness and balances the flavors.
- Serve the Smoky Sweet Potato Chaat warm, garnished with sweet chutney and/or green chutney, as desired.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For extra texture and flavor, try roasting the sweet potatoes with a light coating of olive oil and a pinch of chaat masala before mixing them with the other ingredients.
- If you prefer a smoky flavor, briefly char the boiled sweet potatoes over an open flame or in a grill pan before dicing and tossing them into the salad.
- To make this snack more filling, add a handful of roasted peanuts or puffed rice just before serving for crunch and protein.
- For a vibrant presentation, garnish the dish with thinly sliced radishes and pomegranate seeds, which add both color and a burst of tanginess.
Expert Tips
- Adjust the amount of chaat masala to your liking. Start with a small amount and add more gradually until you reach your desired level of spice.
- For a creamier texture, add a dollop of plain yogurt or a drizzle of tahini sauce to the salad.
- Don't overcook the sweet potatoes. They should be tender but still hold their shape.
Storage Instructions
- This salad is best enjoyed fresh. However, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The texture may change slightly upon refrigeration.
