Recipe Notes

Additional Tips

  • For an extra-crispy exterior, chill the shaped smileys in the freezer for 20-30 minutes before frying; this helps them hold their shape and enhances crunch.
  • If you prefer baking over frying, brush the smileys lightly with oil and bake at 200°C (390°F) for 18-20 minutes, flipping halfway for even crisping.
  • For a fun flavor twist, try mixing a pinch of chaat masala or finely chopped curry leaves into the potato mixture for a distinctly Indian zing.
  • Leftover smileys can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in an oven or air fryer to retain their crispiness instead of microwaving.
