Ingredients
Halwa Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Corn Flour
- 3/4 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Water
- 2 tbsp Ghee
- 1 pinch Orange Food Coloring
Garnish
- 1.5 Cashews
Instructions
- In a small pan, lightly sauté the cashews in a bit of ghee until golden brown and fragrant. Set aside.
- Grease a plate or dish with ghee. This will prevent the halwa from sticking and make it easy to serve later.
- In a bowl, whisk together the corn flour, ½ cup of water, and the food coloring until smooth. Ensure there are no lumps.
- In a heavy-bottomed pan or pot, combine the sugar and the remaining ½ cup of water.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar dissolves completely. Then, reduce the heat to low.
- Slowly pour the corn flour mixture into the sugar syrup while stirring continuously. This prevents lumps from forming.
- Continue stirring until the mixture thickens and becomes glossy, indicating the corn flour is cooked. Stir in the ghee.
- Once the halwa thickens considerably and starts to pull away from the sides of the pan, gently fold in the roasted cashews.
- Transfer the halwa to the greased plate, spreading it evenly. Allow it to cool and set for at least one hour.
- Cut the set halwa into desired shapes and serve. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra layer of flavor, lightly toast the cashews in ghee before adding them to the halwa. This enhances their crunch and imparts a nutty aroma.
- If you prefer a firmer halwa, pour the cooked mixture into a greased tray, level it, and let it set at room temperature for a couple of hours before slicing.
- To infuse a subtle fragrance, add a few drops of rose water or a pinch of cardamom powder towards the end of cooking.
- For a vegan version, substitute ghee with coconut oil and use plant-based food coloring.
Expert Tips
- Use a heavy-bottomed pan to prevent the halwa from sticking and burning.
- Continuously stir the halwa while cooking to ensure a smooth and even consistency.
- Adjust the sugar quantity to your preference, depending on how sweet you like your halwa.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover halwa in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Gently reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop before serving.
