Instructions

- Preheat oven to 180°C (356°F). Grease and flour a 9-inch round baking pan.
Cream Butter and Sugar
- Cream together the softened butter, dark brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This step is crucial for a tender crumb.
Incorporate Wet Ingredients
- Beat in the egg yolk and vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually whisk in the red wine; the mixture may appear curdled, which is normal due to the wine's acidity.
Combine Dry Ingredients
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
Fold Dry into Wet
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, folding gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
Bake the Cake

Cool and Serve
- Let the cake cool in the oven with the door slightly ajar for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Garnish and Enjoy
- Once cool, garnish with shaved white chocolate and serve. Dust with powdered sugar as an alternative garnish.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for the Perfect Red Wine Chocolate Cake:
- Room Temperature is Key: Ensure your butter is softened to room temperature for optimal creaming. This will result in a lighter, fluffier cake.
- Don't Overmix: Overmixing the batter can lead to a tough cake. Mix only until the ingredients are just combined.
- Toothpick Test: Check for doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready.
- Creative Garnishes: Get creative with your garnish! Fresh berries, chocolate shavings, or a dusting of cocoa powder are all excellent options.
