Instructions

Prepare the Yam

  • Boil 1 cup of water with 1 teaspoon of salt. Peel and cut the yam into 1-inch cubes. Add the yam cubes to the boiling water and cook for 10 minutes, or until tender but not mushy.
  • Drain the yam cubes in a colander and allow them to cool slightly.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the yam cubes and shallow fry until golden brown and crispy. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Make the Tamarind Chutney

  • In a small saucepan, combine the tamarind ball (or paste) with 1/2 cup of water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and cook for 5 minutes, or until the tamarind is softened.
  • Remove from heat and let cool slightly. You can blend the mixture for a smoother chutney, or leave it slightly chunky.

Assemble the Chaat

  • In a large bowl, combine the crispy yam cubes with the tamarind chutney, red chili powder, black salt, cumin powder, and salt. Mix gently to coat the yam evenly.
  • Garnish with thinly sliced red onions.
  • Serve immediately and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Expert Tips for the Best Yam Chaat

  • For extra crispy yam cubes, pat them dry with a paper towel before frying.
  • Adjust the amount of red chili powder to your preferred spice level.
  • For a more intense tamarind flavor, use tamarind paste instead of a tamarind ball.
  • Feel free to add other garnishes, such as chopped cilantro, sev (crispy chickpea flour noodles), or pomegranate seeds, to enhance the flavor and presentation.
