Instructions

Prepare the Potato Mixture

  • In a large bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, cornstarch, salt, red chili powder, breadcrumbs, lemon juice, coriander powder, and garam masala. Mix thoroughly until well combined.

Shape the Tikkis

  • Divide the potato mixture into small, lemon-sized portions. Roll each portion into a ball, flatten slightly, and make a small indentation in the center.

Fill and Fry the Tikkis

  • Place 1 teaspoon of mint chutney into the indentation of each potato patty. Gently fold the edges of the patty to enclose the chutney, and then flatten it again into a small, round tikkis.
  • Heat oil in a deep pan or kadai over medium heat. Carefully place the tikkis in the hot oil and deep fry until they turn golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Assemble the Chaat

  • Cut the fried tikkis in half. Arrange them on a serving plate. Drizzle generously with sweet tamarind chutney and red chili sauce. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Expert Tips for the Perfect Khasta Aloo Tikki Chaat

  • For extra crispy tikkis, ensure the potatoes are completely dry before mixing with the other ingredients. You can gently squeeze out excess moisture.
  • Adjust the amount of red chili powder to your liking. Start with less and add more if you prefer a spicier chaat.
  • If you don’t have fresh breadcrumbs, you can use panko breadcrumbs for a lighter, crispier texture.
  • Garnish with chopped cilantro or sev (crispy chickpea flour noodles) for added visual appeal and flavor.
