Ingredients
For the Chicken Marinade
- 500 gm Chicken
- 75 gm Butter
- 1 tbsp Garlic Paste
For the Sauce
- 3 tbsp Butter
- 1/4 cup Onion Paste
- 1 tbsp Ginger Paste
- 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
- 3 tbsp Butter Masala
- 1 1/2 tsp Salt or to taste
- 1/2 cup Water
For the Garnish
- 2 tbsp Coconut Cream
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the chicken, 75g butter, and garlic paste. Mix well to coat the chicken evenly.
- Let the chicken marinate for at least 20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the chicken to tenderize.
- In a large pan or skillet, melt 3 tbsp of butter over medium heat.
- Add the onion paste, ginger paste, and tomato paste to the pan. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the raw smell disappears.
- Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan and bring to a simmer. This helps to cook the paste and create a smooth sauce.
- Strain the sauce through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any solids and create a velvety texture. Set the strained sauce aside.
- In the same pan, melt the remaining 3 tbsp of butter over medium-high heat.
- Add the marinated chicken to the pan and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through. This will take about 8-10 minutes.
- Add the butter masala to the pan with the cooked chicken. Stir to combine.
- Pour the strained sauce over the chicken and butter masala. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Season the sauce with salt to taste.
- Garnish with coconut cream and serve hot with naan, roomali roti, or chapati.
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For extra-tender chicken, marinate the pieces in yogurt, lemon juice, and a spoonful of your homemade spice blend for at least 2 hours or overnight before cooking.
- To achieve a silky-smooth sauce, blend the cooked onion, tomato, ginger, and garlic mixture before returning it to the pan.
- If you prefer a smokier flavor, briefly char the marinated chicken pieces under a broiler or on a grill before simmering in the sauce.
- Leftover Butter Chicken can be transformed into a next-day meal by shredding the chicken and using it as a filling for wraps, naan rolls, or even as a topping for baked potatoes.
Expert Tips
- Adjust the spice level to your preference by adding more or less chili powder or cayenne pepper.
- Garnish the finished dish with fresh cilantro, a dollop of cream, or a squeeze of lemon juice for added brightness.
- Serve Butter Chicken with basmati rice, naan bread, or roti for a complete meal.
Storage Instructions
- Store leftover Butter Chicken in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
