Ingredients
For the Spice Paste
- 1/2 cup Pigeon Peas
- 1/2 cup Mung Bean split yellow mung beans, yellow
- 7 Chilies dry red chilies, adjust to taste, red
- 5 tsp Coriander Seeds
- 4 tsp Peppercorns black
- 3 tsp Cumin Seeds
- 1/2 tsp Asafoetida hing
For the Rasam
- 2 tbsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds rai
- 6 Chilies dry red chilies, adjust to taste, red
- 10 leaves Curry Leaves
- 1 tsp Ginger finely chopped
- 5 clove Garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi
- 1 tsp Chili Powder mirch, adjust to taste
- 1 tsp Garam Masala
- 2 Tomatoes medium-sized, chopped
- 3 tbsp Tamarind Pulp or tamarind extract
- 1 cup Pigeon Pea cooked split pigeon peas
- 4 cups Water more as needed for desired consistency
- Salt to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Spice Paste
- Dry roast the pigeon peas and moong dal until lightly browned. Add the dry red chilies and roast for another minute. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Grind the roasted ingredients along with coriander seeds, peppercorns, cumin seeds, and asafoetida into a smooth paste using a blender or mortar and pestle.
Make the Rasam
- Heat coconut oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or pot. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add dry red chilies, curry leaves, ginger, and garlic. Sauté for a minute until fragrant.
- Add the prepared spice paste and mix well. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until softened.
- Stir in tamarind pulp and mix thoroughly. Add water and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 5-10 minutes.
- Stir in the cooked toor dal and add more water to reach your desired consistency. Add salt to taste.
- Simmer for another 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Serve hot.
