Ingredients
Fish & Marinade
- 500 gm Rohu Fish other firm white fish can be substituted.
- 1 tbsp Lemon Juice for marinating the fish
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder for marinating the fish
- 1/2 tsp Salt for marinating the fish; adjust to taste
Spice Paste
- 1 tbsp Mustard Seeds yellow mustard seeds
- 1/2 tbsp Fenugreek Seeds
- 1 medium Onion
- 10-12 clove Garlic
- 1 inch Ginger
- 1 medium Tomato
Spices & Oil
- 2 tbsp Mustard Oil
- 1-2 tbsp Chili Powder adjust to taste, red
- 1/2 tsp Coriander Powder
- 1/2 tsp Garam Masala
- 1 cup Water
- Salt to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Ingredients
- Soak mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds separately in water for at least 30 minutes. Meanwhile, clean and cut the fish into serving pieces. Marinate the fish with lemon juice, turmeric powder, and salt. Peel and roughly chop the onion, garlic, ginger, and tomato.
Make the Spice Paste
- Drain the soaked mustard and fenugreek seeds. Combine them with the onion, garlic, ginger, and tomato in a blender. Blend into a smooth paste.
Cook the Curry
- Heat mustard oil in a wok or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add the spice paste and cook for about 2-3 minutes, until fragrant. Stir frequently to prevent burning.
Add Spices and Simmer
- Add the red chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the spices are fragrant and the oil starts to separate from the masala.
Add Fish and Water
- Pour in 1 cup of water, bring to a simmer, then gently add the marinated fish. Reduce heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 5-6 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through. Be careful not to overcook the fish.
Serve
- Serve the Bihari Fish Curry hot with steamed rice or roti. Garnish with fresh cilantro, if desired.
