Specific Food Storage Requirements

Proper food storage helps maintain food quality by retaining flavor, color, texture and nutrients, while reducing the chance of contracting a food-borne illness.

Some specific food storage requirements as far as fridges and freezers are concerned are the following:

  • use containers, plastic wraps or bags for storing food
  • avoid placing unpackaged food in the fridge or freezer
  • place food in the fridge properly
  • don’t leave the refrigerator door open for long
  • make sure food has cooled down before you put it in the fridge
  • don’t stack foods tightly, allow proper air circulation
  • never refreeze foods that have started to thaw

Raw meat, fish, poultry should be put in containers before placing them in the fridge. Seafood should be stored on ice in the fridge. Fish fillets should be wrapped in plastic foil to avoid contact with ice. Vegetables should not be washed before storing.

Eggs should be stored at temperature < 5οC. Chocolate should be stored at temperature <12-13οC. Sweets should be stored at temperature < 5οC.
