Ingredients
Dough
- 4 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tbsp Active Yeast dry
- 1/2 tsp Salt
- 2 tbsp Milk warm
- 1 cup Water warm
- 4 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 tbsp Oregano dried
- 1 tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 tbsp Basil dried
- 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
Pesto
- 1 cup Basil Leaves fresh, packed
- 2 tbsp Garlic minced
- 2 Chillies green
- 1/2 cup Olive Oil
- 1/4 tsp Salt
Flour Paste
- 1 tbsp All-Purpose Flour
- 1 tbsp Water
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let stand for 10 minutes until foamy. This activates the yeast and ensures a well-risen dough.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, dried oregano, chili powder, dried basil, and garlic powder.
- Add the activated yeast mixture, warm water, and olive oil to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- To make the pesto, combine the fresh basil leaves, minced garlic, green chilies, olive oil, and salt in a food processor. Pulse until a smooth paste forms.
- Punch down the risen dough and knead briefly for 2 minutes. Roll it out into a large circle, about 1/2 inch thick. Spread the pesto evenly over the dough.
- Fold the dough in half, then cut lengthwise from the middle, stopping about an inch before the edge. This creates the strands for braiding.
- Braid the two strands of dough, then pinch the ends together to seal. Transfer the braided loaf to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Make a flour paste by combining equal parts flour and water. Use this to seal the ends of the braid securely.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 35 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Brush the baked bread with melted butter for extra flavor and shine.
- Let the Braided Pesto Bread cool slightly before slicing and serving. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes
Good To Know
- For an extra spicy kick, try blending a few sun-dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers into your pesto before spreading it onto the dough.
- If you want a richer crust, brush the braided loaf with a mixture of egg yolk and a tablespoon of milk before baking; for a vegan option, use plant-based milk instead.
Expert Tips
- Use fresh basil for the best pesto flavor. If fresh basil isn't available, high-quality pesto from a jar is a good substitute.
- Don't overwork the dough, as this can result in a tough crust. Knead just until smooth and elastic.
- For a more even bake, rotate the loaf halfway through the baking time.
Storage Instructions
- To keep the bread soft for up to two days, wrap it in a clean kitchen towel while it cools, then store in an airtight container. Reheat slices in the oven for a just-baked texture.
