Ingredients
Breadfruit Preparation
- 2 cup Breadfruit (kada chakka), finely chopped
Spice Blend
- 1.5 tsp Salt or to taste
- 2 tbsp Chili Powder (mirch)
- 2 tsp Mustard Seeds (rai)
- 0.5 tsp Fenugreek Seeds (methi dana)
- 0.25 tsp Asafoetida (hing)
For Tempering/Seasoning
- 0.25 cup Sesame Oil (gingelly oil)
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds (rai)
- 2 Chilies broken into pieces, red
- 5 Chilies green
Instructions
Prepare the Breadfruit
- Finely chop 2 cups of breadfruit.
Make the Spice Paste
- In a blender, coarsely crush 5 green chilies and 2 tsp mustard seeds. Set aside.
- Dry roast 0.5 tsp fenugreek seeds until fragrant. Grind to a fine powder along with the 2 tsp mustard seeds (no need to roast these).
Marinate the Breadfruit
- Mix the chopped breadfruit with 1.5 tsp salt. Marinate for at least 20 minutes, or preferably overnight for a deeper flavor.
Combine Ingredients
- Add the chili powder, ground mustard and fenugreek seed powder to the marinated breadfruit. Mix well.
Temper the Spices
- Heat 0.25 cup sesame oil in a small pan. Add 1 tsp mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the 2 broken red chilies and 0.25 tsp asafoetida. Remove from heat immediately.
Finish the Pickle
- Pour the hot tempered spices over the breadfruit mixture. Mix thoroughly.
- Your spicy breadfruit pickle is ready! Serve with chapathi, rice, dosa, or as a side dish.
