Ingredients
For the Gulab Jamun
- 4 slices Bread white bread works best
- 1/4 cup Milk
- 2 tbsp Sugar for inside the balls
- 2 cup Refined Oil for deep frying
For the Sugar Syrup (Chashni)
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 cup Water
- 1 tsp Cardamom Powder optional, adds a warm, aromatic flavor
For the Lollipop Presentation
- 1 tbsp Fennel Seeds optional, for garnish, saunf, sweet
- 10 Toothpicks
Instructions
Prepare the Bread Dough
- Remove the crusts from the bread slices and tear the bread into small, roughly-sized pieces. In a bowl, gently combine the bread pieces with the milk. Mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
Shape the Gulab Jamun Balls
- Divide the dough into small, equal-sized portions. Roll each portion into a small ball. Place a small pinch of sugar inside each ball before sealing it completely.
Make the Sugar Syrup (Chashni)
- In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and cardamom powder (if using). Stir well and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the syrup thickens to a one-thread consistency (a drop of syrup between your thumb and forefinger should form a thin thread).
Fry the Gulab Jamun
- Heat the oil in a deep pan or pot over medium-low heat. Carefully add the bread balls to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the balls, turning occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown.
Soak and Cool
- Remove the fried balls from the oil and immediately transfer them into the prepared sugar syrup. Let them soak in the syrup for at least 1-2 hours, or until they are fully saturated and have absorbed the syrup’s flavor.
Create the Lollipops
- Once cooled, carefully insert a toothpick into each gulab jamun. Sprinkle the sweet fennel seeds generously onto the soaked balls. Serve immediately and enjoy!
