Instructions

Prepare the Bread Dough

  • Remove the crusts from the bread slices and tear the bread into small, roughly-sized pieces. In a bowl, gently combine the bread pieces with the milk. Mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Avoid overmixing.

Shape the Gulab Jamun Balls

  • Divide the dough into small, equal-sized portions. Roll each portion into a small ball. Place a small pinch of sugar inside each ball before sealing it completely.

Make the Sugar Syrup (Chashni)

  • In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and cardamom powder (if using). Stir well and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the syrup thickens to a one-thread consistency (a drop of syrup between your thumb and forefinger should form a thin thread).

Fry the Gulab Jamun

  • Heat the oil in a deep pan or pot over medium-low heat. Carefully add the bread balls to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the balls, turning occasionally, until they turn a deep golden brown.

Soak and Cool

  • Remove the fried balls from the oil and immediately transfer them into the prepared sugar syrup. Let them soak in the syrup for at least 1-2 hours, or until they are fully saturated and have absorbed the syrup’s flavor.

Create the Lollipops

  • Once cooled, carefully insert a toothpick into each gulab jamun. Sprinkle the sweet fennel seeds generously onto the soaked balls. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Expert Tips for Perfect Bread Gulab Jamun Lollipops

  • Don't overcrowd the pan while frying the gulab jamuns. This will ensure even cooking and prevent sticking.
  • Adjust the sweetness of the sugar syrup according to your preference. You can add more or less sugar as needed.
  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of saffron strands to the sugar syrup.
  • Get creative with toppings! Experiment with other sprinkles, chopped nuts, or even a drizzle of chocolate for extra flair.
