Ingredients
For the Arepas Dough
- 2 cup Masarepa precooked cornmeal
- 1/3 tsp Salt or to taste
- 2 tsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Water hot
For the Cabbage & Cheese Filling
- 1 cup Cabbage shredded
- 1 Onion finely sliced
- 2 clove Garlic minced
- 2 Tbsp Cream Cheese
- 1 tsp Olive Oil
- 1/2 tsp Oregano dried
- 1/2 tsp Pepper Flakes red
- 1-2 tsp Salt or to taste
Instructions
Make the Arepa Dough
- In a large bowl, combine the masarepa and salt.
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Add the vegetable oil and hot water.
- Mix with a spoon or spatula until a shaggy dough forms. Let it rest for 5 minutes to allow the masarepa to fully hydrate.
- Knead the dough with your hands until smooth and pliable. This develops the gluten and creates a cohesive texture.
- Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball.
- Place each dough ball between two sheets of plastic wrap or inside a zip-top bag. Using a rolling pin or your hands, flatten each ball into a disc about ½-inch thick.
Cook the Arepas
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 2-3 teaspoons of oil.
- Place 2-3 arepas in the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and slightly crisp.
- Covering the skillet during cooking helps to create a softer, more pillowy texture.
- The arepas should be cooked through and feel firm to the touch.
- Let the cooked arepas cool slightly before slicing them open horizontally, like a pita pocket.
Make the Cabbage & Cheese Filling
- In a medium bowl, combine the shredded cabbage, sliced onion, minced garlic, cream cheese, olive oil, oregano, red pepper flakes, and salt. Mix well.
Assemble the Arepas
- Fill each arepa with the flavorful cabbage and cheese mixture. Serve immediately and enjoy!
