For the Tomato Puree

For the Rasam

  • 1 cup Tamarind soak 1 ball of tamarind in 1 cup of warm water for 15 minutes, then extract the pulp.
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric haldi
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder adjust to taste, red
  • 1 tbsp Coriander dhania
  • 7 clove Garlic peeled
  • 1.5 tsp Salt or to taste

Prepare the Tomato Puree

  • Cook 5 large tomatoes with 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles. Let it cool, then peel the skins and blend to a smooth puree using a blender or food processor.

Make the Rasam

  • In a pot, combine the tomato puree, tamarind pulp, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, crushed garlic, and salt. Add 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Tempering

  • Heat the oil in a small pan. Add the asafoetida, followed by the urad dal. Sauté until the dal turns light golden brown. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the spices splutter and become fragrant.

Combine and Serve

  • Pour the prepared tempering into the simmering rasam. Mix well. Remove from heat. Serve hot with steamed rice and papadums.
