Starbucks Defiant Response To Trump’s Immigration Ban
As people everywhere are trying to come to terms with the fact that Old MacDonald has become the US President, here comes another jolt – the immigration ban. President Donald Trump signed an executive order late Friday, temporarily banning immigration from seven countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, all with predominantly Muslim population. Though Trump has downplayed the ban and maintained that it is not a Muslim ban, it hardly seems so.
US has always welcomed migrants from all over the world and this executive order is totally un-American and mean. In fact, it won’t be wrong to say that America is “America” today because of all the migrants that have entered into it and made it their home and contributed to making it great.
The executive order has sparked epidemic international criticism, outrage from civil right activists, many US politicians have condemned the order as being antithetical to American ideals and lots of peaceful protest have erupted all over US to demonstrate solidarity with the migrants. Lots of politicians and companies like Apple, Google, Starbucks, Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook etc have condemned the order as well.
Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz announced the company’s plan to hire 10,000 refugees worldwide over the next five years in response to Donald Trump’s immigration ban. In a letter to current employees on Sunday, Howard said the company would “start this effort here in the U.S. by making the initial focus of our hiring efforts on those individuals who have served with U.S. troops as interpreters and support personnel in the various countries where our military has asked for such support.”
This statement quite obviously irked the Trump supporters and has started a tweetstorm, with a group of twitter users pledging to stop supporting starbucks, while those against the immigration ban saying they would buy coffee and food from Starbucks to support the move. #BoycottStarbucks and #DrinkStarbucks have become a trending topic on twitter.
