Instructions

  • Thoroughly wash the fresh ginger. Thinly slice the ginger, with or without peeling.
  • Place the ginger slices in a pitcher. Add the water. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate overnight to allow the ginger to infuse the water.
  • The next morning, gently warm the ginger-infused water until lukewarm. Do not boil, as this can diminish the delicate flavors.
  • Pour the warmed water into mugs or glasses. Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon per serving. Stir to combine.
  • Garnish with a lemon slice. Enjoy warm or cool.

Recipe Notes

Good To Know

  • Prefer to drink this detoxifying drink before breakfast.
  • Ginger can be omitted.
  • Squeeze the lemon juice just before drinking to maximize its health benefits.
  • For extra flavor and detox benefits, add a few fresh mint leaves or a pinch of ground turmeric when steeping the ginger.
  • To maximize ginger’s beneficial compounds, grate or finely chop the ginger before steeping, and let it simmer gently for at least 5–10 minutes before adding lemon juice.
  • For a naturally sweeter version, infuse a few slices of green apple or cucumber during steeping instead of adding honey or sugar.

Expert Tips

  • For a spicier kick, use a variety of ginger known for its higher pungency, like Jamaican ginger.
  • If you find the drink too tart, a small amount of raw honey or maple syrup can be added after the drink has cooled slightly to preserve their beneficial enzymes.
  • Experiment with other citrus fruits like lime or orange for a variation on the classic lemon-ginger combination.

Storage Instructions

  • If you plan to make a larger batch for the week, store it in a glass pitcher in the refrigerator and give it a quick shake before serving, as ginger particles may settle at the bottom.
