Ingredients
Bananas
- 2 large Bananas but firm; the riper, ripe, the sweeter the chips
Spices & Seasoning
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder haldi; adds a subtle color and flavor
- 1-1.5 tsp Salt or to taste; adjust to your preference
Frying
- 2 cup Oil or coconut oil; enough for deep frying, sunflower, vegetable
Instructions
Prepare the Bananas
- Wash and peel the bananas thoroughly.
- Using a mandoline slicer or sharp knife, slice the bananas into very thin, even chips (about 1/8 inch thick). Thinner chips will fry crispier.
Season the Banana Chips
- In a bowl, gently toss the banana slices with turmeric powder and salt. Ensure all slices are evenly coated.
Fry the Banana Chips
- Heat the oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pan or wok over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot enough that a small piece of banana sizzles immediately when added.
- Carefully add the banana slices to the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry in batches if necessary.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes, or until the chips are golden brown and crispy, flipping halfway through.
Drain and Cool
- Remove the fried banana chips from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Allow the chips to cool completely before storing. This allows them to crisp further.
Serve and Enjoy
- Serve your homemade South Indian Banana Chips with a cup of tea or as a delicious snack. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
Recipe Notes
Expert Tips for Perfect Banana Chips
- Use ripe, but firm bananas: Overripe bananas may be too soft and difficult to slice thinly.
- Don't overcrowd the pan: Overcrowding will lower the oil temperature, resulting in soggy chips.
- Maintain consistent oil temperature: Adjust the heat as needed to keep the oil hot enough for even frying.
- Proper cooling is crucial: Allow the chips to cool completely to achieve maximum crispiness.
