Bhindi(okra) Blunder

Let me share my very first cooking experience. So here is the situation and I am sure many can relate to it and would be sailing in the same boat as me. Cooking, before marriage was just coffee and Meri wali Maggi (Oh God!! I miss you so much yaar, Come back soon).

I never felt like burning my hands or rather was too scared to burn my hands and hence never entered the kitchen. As wise ones say, life sails in a completely new direction after marriage and the same happened to me inevitably. We moved to a different city where it was just both of us…How romantic J

First few days we used to dine out or get the ‘dabba’ (Saviors they are, Thanks to these services) but gradually I had to spill the beans (pun intendedJ) in the Kitchen…After returning home from office, I used to call my Mom for every single recipe. So, for few days the staple food was “Dal chawal” and “Jeera Aloo” and my husband silently admired my consistency with the hope that one day something delicious would come on the dining table.

After couple of days, I thought of giving him a surprise and brought Paneer (cottage cheese) and Bhindi (okra) on my way back from the office.

That day I came a little early, quickly chopped the bhindi and called my Mom to know the recipe, but somehow could not speak to her … but I remembered her advice which every mom gives to her newly wed daughter that “when u make dry veggies you need to cook with some water as they usually get cooked in steam” And I knotted this Gyan (advice) into my brain permanently without giving any logical thought to it.

I added all the dry spices and added bhindi and yes you guessed it right, I poured almost half a cup of water and covered it.

Next, was Paneer, this is one dish which u cook in any style it will taste good… So it was a cake walk for me.

Making Rotis was a big task and till date, even after 8 years of marriage, the story is the same. My husband has also given up on round chapatis!

Dinner time! I laid the table and when I opened to see the bhindi it looked like some creepy crawly creatures floating in a yellow fluid…eww…..we laughed our heads off. I got famous in his family with the watery bhindi.

It was that day and till date whenever I cook bhindi I get a smile on my face. By the way did I tell you the story of My first try of Besan Kadhi? Stay tuned.
