A Good Bread Can Go A Long Way!!
Growing up in Dubai, bread was a staple food in our family. Easy to get, convenient to use, it was a last minute saver most of the times. It appeared in our breakfast tiffin’s, in our evening snacks and a lot of times at our dinner tables as it can soak up a good curry. Unlike now where one can get hold of many varities of bread loaves made from whole wheat or rye or spelt or multi grain flours we only had the white bread loaf then. Another staple that needs to be mentioned is the khubz or how we called it khuboos, a round flat bread traditionally cooked in a clay oven which is very similar to the pita bread. Soft and fluffy we loved it with our curries, in our shawarma or souvlaki or even just to eat it plain simple. A wave of nostalgia sets in as I start thinking about breads. So many good memories of family meals, celebrations, good times with friends and even some alone time just with a slice of toast with jam or butter. These memories essentially motivates me to bake my own bread at home and share with family and friends. A foccacia bread I baked recently with so much love and care, exactly the feelings my memories of my growing up years evoke. Food and memories of it has such a deep emotional connect and for me most of the times rather than talking about it they usually end up on my dining table.
