Pita is a flat leavened bread from Arabic, Middle Eastern cuisine. Very much like our desi Roti(Chapati). It is Served with various sauces, Falafel and salad in sandwich form. Pita is very easy to make and adds an exotic touch to your regular food, which makes it a must try on weekends 😉

Instructions

  • If you are using instant yeast like me just add all the ingredients except water to a large bowl and mix well. If you are using Active Dry yeast then first proof the yeast in warm water with sugar and then mix this yeast water to the flour.
  • After mixing start adding water little by little and form a medium soft but smooth dough.
  • Brush the dough with a little olive oil and keep it aside covered for an hour or till it gets doubled.
  • Now knock out the air from the dough and make small equal size balls out of it
  • And make chapati like circles with the dough balls, these should be a quarter-inch in thickness.
  • Now you can either bake them in oven or simply on your Tawa on stove top, I did both to see how it turns out.
  • For oven preheat at 200 degree and then put the rolled dough on a dusted tray in the oven for about 5-7 minutes or till you see a nice brown color on top and the bread is fully puffed up.
  • For Tawa heat the Tawa on your stove top and put the rolled dough on it, turn it after 15-20 seconds and cook on the other side too. Use a spatula or kitchen towel to put a little pressure on the bread so that it puffs up and the pocket is formed.
  • For serving slice the Pita in half and you will see the pocket. This pocket can be filled with your favorite stuffing. We stuffed it with some cucumbers tomatoes and Falafel. Topped with yummy Hummus and sour cream.
