Festivals are the time when we prepare delicious food for the family. Kempu Chitranna is one such recipe. It is a traditional recipe from South Kanara region of Karnataka. It is delicious with a nice aroma. Celebrate the festival with this Kempu Chitranna or Red Rice.

Wash rice and cook it in pressure cooker. The grains should be seperate. Once it is done, and the pressure releases by itself, put it in a plate to cool.
Grind coconut, mustard seeds and dry red chillies to a paste. Use some water.
Take oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, as it crackles, put bengal gram, urad dal, turmeric powder and asafetida. After a few seconds put groundnuts, saute for a few seconds, then add cashew pieces and curry leaves.
Now, add the paste to it and saute for five minutes on a low flame. Once you get a good aroma, add salt, mix and switch of the stove.
Add rice to it. Mix gently. Kempu Chitranna is ready to serve.
Notes
Coconut used is fresh one. Do not substitute with dry dessicated coconut.
