Odia Habisa Dalma

Habisa Dalma is a traditional Odia recipe that is had mostly during Kartik Maah.This Dalma is a no onion no garlic item. Habisa Dalma is an extremely easy recipe and is very tasty as well as healthy.

  • Moong dal-1cup
  • Elephant apple-2 long cut slices
  • Ginger- About an inch crushed
  • Raw banana/colocasia/Yam/Raw Papaya cut into dice-1.5cup
  • Ghee-1.5tsp
  • Asafoetida-1/2 tsp
  • Jeera-1 tsp
  • Bay leaf-1
  • Salt
  • Coriander leaves- for garnishing


  • Soak the dal for about ten minutes.Meanwhile cut and dice the vegetables.Crush the Elephant apple slices a bit so that they look shredded but not disintegrated.(This is done to release the tanginess of the elephant Apple into the dal)
  • Take the dal and all the veggies together in a pressure cooker.Add the crushed ginger.Put about 3-4 cups of water.And let it pressure cook till one whistle. Take it immediately off the gas and let it settle.
  • In a kadhai,heat ghee. Put the asafoetida,jeera and bay leaf.As soon as the tadka is fragrant,put the dal on it and cook for a while.
  • Add chopped dhaniya patta and crushed roasted jeera& Lal mirch for garnishing. Serve hot with rice or Puri.
