About Narkeli Chire

Narkeli Chire is a cherished traditional Bengali snack, lovingly passed down through generations in my family. In earlier times, this delightful treat was prepared to welcome guests and offer to the gods, with my ancestors skillfully shaping coconut to resemble flat rice. I learned this recipe from my mother, who inherited it from her grandparents, keeping our culinary heritage alive.
In today’s busy world, I've simplified the process, making it easier to enjoy this nostalgic snack without sacrificing its authentic flavor. Sweet coconut, jaggery, and fragrant white sesame seeds come together in this homestyle recipe, perfect for sharing with loved ones or savoring a taste of Bengal’s rich traditions.

Additional Tips

  • For extra crunch, lightly toast the chire (flattened rice) and sesame seeds separately before mixing them with the coconut and jaggery; this enhances both flavor and texture.
  • If you prefer a chewier snack, use freshly grated coconut, but for a drier and crunchier version, opt for desiccated coconut or lightly roast the fresh coconut until just golden.
  • To shape the mixture into traditional discs or laddoos, let the jaggery syrup cool slightly until just warm, then grease your hands and gently press the mixture into your desired shapes before it fully sets.
  • Store Narkeli Chire in an airtight container lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and maintain crispness for up to a week; avoid refrigeration, as it can make the mixture soggy.
