Idli or idly are a type of savoury rice cake, popular as breakfast foods in South india. The cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented urad dal and rice.

  • 500 gm Rice
  • 200 gm Urad Dal
  • 1-2 tsp Salt or as per taste
  • 1 tsp Baking Soda


  • Soak rice n urad dal separate for whole day (12 hours).
  • Grind this soaked rice n dal together into a fine batter. Cover the lid n keep overnight.
  • In the morning, add salt n baking soda in it n gently mix.
  • Grease idli steamer moulds n pour laddleful batter in each. Steam it for 30minutes. Transfer it to a plate.
  • You r done. Serve this idli or rice cake with famous south indian coconut chutney and sambar.
