  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice

  • Take one cup milk in a bowl.
  • Add 1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice, stir once and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes the milk will curdle and buttermilk is ready to use.

Notes

  1. Buttermilk is generally categorised in two different forms Traditional and Cultured. Traditional one is made with the leftover substance after butter is churned out of cream and the Cultured is the leftover thick substance after curdling of milk.
  2. In India buttermilk is also known as Chaas and is made with different flavours like masala or spiced with a dash of fresh mint or corianderleavea. It’s a refreshing drink for hot summer days.
  3. The vegan substitute for buttermilk is soymilk.
  4. The ratio of milk to vinegar/lemon juice will always be 1:1 (1 cup : 1 teaspoon)
