About Apple Crumble

Inspired by "The Incredible Spicemen" of BBC, this Apple Crumble recipe instantly caught my eye and had me eager to try it in my kitchen. The first attempt had my kids asking for more, despite my less-than-perfect photos. On my second try, everything came together—the taste, aroma, texture, and even the photos were spot on!
This easy and heavenly dessert combines tender apples with a buttery, golden crumble, creating a treat that’s both simple and irresistible. It’s now a family favorite, and my kids still get excited every time I mention Apple Crumble. Perfect for brunch or as a comforting snack, this dish promises to win hearts with every bite.

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 180 degree C. In a bowl, put the flour, brown sugar and 3/4 cup butter, rub them into the flour till it looks like bread crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the flour to the baking tray in a thin layer and bake in microwave for 6 mins or until lightly brown. Remove from the oven for every 2 mins and stir them with a fork, inorder to break out the lumps.
  • Peel and roughly chop the apple. Heat butter in a sauce pan, add in the cinnamon stick, star anise when it starts to bubble.
  • Add in the apples and cook until the edges become crispy. Add in the granulated sugar and stir well until it dissolves.
  • Remove from fire and take out the cinnamon and star anise.
  • Remove the crumble from oven when it turns golden brown.
  • Grease the baking tray in which you are going prepare the apple crumble and start layering. First spoon apple butter filling and then sprinkle the crumble on the top.
  • Again bake it for 5 mins, until the crumble is browned and fruit mixture starts bubbling. Remove from the oven. Bring it room temperature. Serve it.

Recipe Notes

Additional Tips

  • For a subtle Indian twist, add a pinch of cardamom powder or a few crushed cloves to the apple filling along with the cinnamon and star anise to complement the spices and elevate the aroma.
  • If you prefer a crunchier topping, mix in a handful of chopped toasted nuts such as walnuts or almonds into the crumble before baking.
  • To avoid a soggy bottom, allow the apple mixture to cool slightly before topping with the crumble, or bake the apples for 10 minutes before adding the crumb layer.
  • Leftover apple crumble can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat gently in the oven to restore the crisp texture of the topping before serving.
